- New York. Everywhere ART.
OCTOBER
Something to be greatly appreciated about New York, is the abundance of galleries and art we can access. Not only that it is a great resource for school field trips!
Some galleries are free (mostly those in the Chelsea area), most museums have admissions. (Ceramics gallery shown below).
I had visited these for my Design Studio class. At the time we had begun a project about Urban Dwelling. We are designing an apartment for a multigenerational family, and implement ideas about own personal ideas of home. Visiting local architectural works and galleries can help strengthen our process.
On my own, I had visited the SECOND EDITION, PAVILLON DE L’ESPRIT NOUVEAU at the Swiss Institute. The gallery is imitating Le Corbusier’s past work: Le’esprit Nouveau, and creating a modern statement using unconventional furniture pieces and green screen. The home as a virtual reality and machine.
I also visited the MOMA’s exhibit “ENDLESS HOUSE”

Showing models and drawings of famous architects such as Robert Venturi, and Mies Van Der Rohe.
MODULIGHTOR
There was also a mandatory trip to Paul Rudolph’s Modulightor. As a class we visited and were able to talk to one of the architects friends who helped design the apartment, and to those that manage the building’s shop. The first floor is a lighting fixture shop, basement is a workshop and the floors’ above is the residence. It was really great to be able to talk with the shop owners as well, who were able to personally show us Rudolph’s original drawings.
Modulightor is also holds open houses once a month, which you have to sign up for.
